Putting yourself first does not mean you are selfish. To cultivate a healthy mind, spirit, and body, it is important to prioritize self-care habits. Whether you are in a relationship, have a family, or are just an individual who focuses on others in your life (friends, family, etc.), we can all forget to prioritize ourselves sometimes. Read on to find out tips on how to prioritize yourself.
Learning to prioritize yourself goes beyond self-care. It also means changing beliefs that are keeping you from prioritizing others before yourself. Put yourself first, so you don’t end up last.
Shift Your Mindset
The first step is to change your mindset and stop thinking that prioritizing yourself is selfish. When we spend all of our time caring for others, we end up tired and stressed. When you take time for yourself, you end up feeling recharged and energized.
Conquer Limiting Beliefs
Once you realize you need to help yourself first before you can help others, you need to overcome any limiting beliefs you might have. These are the stories you tell yourself that could be holding you back from putting yourself first.
Forget Expectations
Limiting beliefs are often based on expectations from others. We feel pressure in our careers from our parents, the need to have the perfect home, expectations in relationships, and the list can go on. To prioritize ourselves, we must remember that expectations from others don’t matter. Think about what you really want and prioritize your true goals in each of these areas. Setting boundaries and releasing yourself from those standards allows you to invest time in yourself and what you love.
Discover Your True Self
It is so easy to get caught up in other identities the world creates for us. When these roles end or change, you have time to prioritize yourself, but the problem is, that you don’t really know who you are. Start by asking yourself what you are most passionate about and start scheduling those things into your life.
Keep Growing
We all have busy lives and sometimes we confuse being busy with growth. But putting others first does not mean you are growing. Learning to prioritize yourself is true growth. Commit to improving every area in your life. Keep a journal, learn new skills, and do some self-care activities. Remember it is not selfish to prioritize yourself, it is one of the most selfless things you can do!
Being intentional and taking steps to prioritize yourself is a great way to practice self-care!
